Course Offerings

All course work at Parkside is designed to address the California State Standards for each curricular area. Parkside Intermediate uses State adopted textbooks to deliver the curriculum to the student population.

English/ Language Arts:

All students take three full years of English/ Language Arts at Parkside. Parkside offers a leveled program to address the needs and abilities of all learners. Students at Parkside may use any of the following text based upon their grade and placement: Open Court, Holt or Inside.

Mathematics:

All students take three full years of Mathematics at Parkside. Similar to English/ Language Arts, Parkside offers a leveled program to address the needs and abilities of all students. Sixth Grade students may be placed in the Course 1 program. Seventh Grade students may be placed in the Course 2 program, the Algebra Readiness program, or the Algebra program. Eighth Graders may be placed in the Course 2 program, the Algebra Readiness program or the Algebra program. All students will use the newest McDougall-Littell adoption as texts for the courses at all grade levels.

Physical Education:

All students take three full years of Physical Education at Parkside. Students learn the fundamentals of sports and activities and are assessed on their cooperation, participation, and overall improvement over time. Students will participate in the cross-country running program, and a variety of activities including basketball, volleyball, paddle tennis, and floor hockey. Students are expected to dress in their Parkside gym clothes on a daily basis and participate to the best of their abilities.

Science:

All students take three full years of Science at Parkside. Sixth graders take an introductory course including Geology. Seventh Graders take Life Science while Eighth Graders take Physical Science. Students will be exposed to a wide range of curriculum supported by hands-on activities in the classroom. All students will use the newest Glencoe adoption as texts for the courses at both grade levels.

Social Studies:

All students take three full years of Social Studies at Parkside. Sixth graders explore learning in Ancient Cultures, Seventh Grade students explore learning in World History and Geography with a concentration in Medieval and Early Modern Times while Eighth Grade students explore learning in United States History and Geography with a concentration in Growth and Conflict.

Electives:

The elective offerings at Parkside are designed to provide enrichment to the student population and address the needs of the whole child. Electives may be year-long or semester-long. Year-long electives include: Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and our comprehensive Music program. Semester-long electives include: Art and Technology.
